October 2008
If you have any friends who may be thinking of joining the club, now is a good time.
Anyone joining now will pay for 12 months, which will include the remainder of this year and the whole of next year, so effectively they receive up to 3 months free.
Thursday Theme Nights
Geoff and his team continue to offer superb value for money downstairs in the Don Stott restaurant. Thursdays were traditionally very quiet nights and so some weeks ago we started theme nights on Thursdays. Geoff started off with Curry nights. On these nights there have been numerous tasty curry dishes available and these have proved extremely popular. However being mindful of the need to change Geoff has now produced a range of different theme nights, which are advertised well in advance on the notice boards at the clubrooms. In the next few weeks members can enjoy amongst other things, Fish and Chip nights, Asian Buffet nights, Sirloin Steak nights, and remember once a month the Tripe and Onion Club meets in the Function room and this is often also available as a special in the normal dining room. There is of course always a normal menu available on these nights. Remember if you have a celebration coming up why not use the function room, remember there is no charge for hiring this room, (some clubs charge several hundred dollars to hire a room such as this one) and the drinks and food prices ensure your event need not cost the earth. Music can also be arranged for you.
All Sports Day was held at the end of August and 14 teams took part in a great fun day and our thanks go out to the main organisers Chris and Christine Hicks, the many helpers on the day and of course our generous sponsors.
Sports are an important part of the club and it is good to see so many taking an active interest. Remember it's a great way to meet new friends.
Most of you will by now be aware of the sudden and very sad passing of our good friend Eddie Taylor in July. Eddie had entertained so many people in this RSA and many others throughout Auckland for many, many years. He was of course more than just an entertainer. He had become a friend to so many of us and had performed at so many members private parties that he had become one of our extended family.
We now have a new event for you on Sundays, usually twice a month if possible. This is a Sunday Music Club and is on from around 2pm-5pm. You can come along and join the musicians on stage for a song or sit back and enjoy watching others. This really is becoming a very popular afternoon, and is advertised well in advance in the clubrooms ahead of each date.
Our team of volunteers continue to provide a wonderful service for those in need of a hand getting to medical appointments etc. Please remember these are volunteers and that getting into Auckland early in the morning, or indeed home in the evening is not easy from the Shore and can mean a very early start or late return, so please try to ensure your appointments are made at a reasonable time or you may have to make your own arrangements. The hospitals normally understand and will change appointments.
Any people who still doubt the benefits to the club of a Members draw only had to be at the club on a Friday night in the last few weeks of September to see the huge increase in patronage on these nights when the draw had reached a high amount, and of course even more so on September 12 when it had to be won, and of course one lucky member went home $1950 better off. These nights are hugely beneficial to the club and of course fun for the members. Please remember it is vital that members support the $100 note raffles as these provide the funds for the members draw.
Melbourne Cup Day this year is on Tuesday 4 November. Remember this is a great fun day, and we will again have a "Special Members Enclosure" and all the usual events on the day. The program for the day will be advertised in late October. Come on in for a great day of Racing, Raffles, Food, Drink and Prizes.
